McAlester Public Schools is dedicated to providing all students with a quality education regardless of student needs. All students complete a Home Language Survey upon enrollment. If a language other than English is specified the student will be screened for English Language (EL) Learner services. Language acquisition plans will be developed for students identified as English Learners in order to meet their individual needs and provide support for academic success. Students remain in the EL program until English proficiency is demonstrated through the annual WIDA ACCESS 2.0 English Language Proficiency Test. This test is offered each spring and all EL students are required to participate.
EL students enrolled in McAlester Public Schools are provided services through regular classroom instruction. Supplemental language instruction through pull-out programs and other supports is offered according to the student’s needs and developed educational plan.
